Capitalism's grow-or-die imperative stands radically at odds with ecology's imperative of interdependence and limit. The two imperatives can no longer coexist with each other; nor can any society founded on the myth that they can be reconciled hope to survive. On a nearby field in giant letters the Japanese words, "We came back" . They were planted by 80 year old Ukichi Sato,

"I did evacuated to begin with, but I've been back to patrol many times. So I'm not worried about radiation at all."
