(New Year) Zodiac Puzzle
This can be used as an introduction to the Japanese Zodiac in depth or just as a quick exercise. The Japanese Zodiac is based on the Chinese Zodiac with each year belonging to a particular creature. People born in that year are said to have particular traits. In depth study of the zodiac could introduce adjectives for each creature, the story of how the order came to be established and discussion as to the merits of zodiacs in general - language depending of course on the student's ability.
Most Japanese elementary-aged children I've encountered can name the twelve signs in order. Here they are:
I start by getting the students to list the creatures in order. When complete I get them to read and solve the only clue. The clue is coloure-coded so the students know where to write the anser. Then I offer the challenge to see how fast they can fill out the rest of the crossword. Any time under one minute is excellent.
